10 Best Hiking Trails in Alaska

Alaska has been nicknamed America’s “Last Frontier.” And rightly so; for our largest state has only a few persons per square mile, making it a perfect place to enjoy the wilderness. Ten great hiking trails will be discussed here.

(1) Deer Mountain Trail, Ketchikan, is in the far southeastern corner of the state, in Tongass National Forest. It leads up 3,000-foot Deer Mountain.

(2) Chilkoot Pass Trail, Skagway, is also in Tongass. The trail was taken by prospectors in 1898.

(3) Russian Lakes Trail, Seward, further west, goes by lake cabins where one can go trout fishing.

(4) Harding Icefield Trail, Seward, lies in the spectacular glacier area of Kenai Fjords National Park.

(5) Lost Lake Trail, Seward, goes by an alpine lake in the Kenai Mountains.

(6) Flattop Mountain Trail, Anchorage, takes hikers up the state’s most commonly used trail.

(7) Resurrection Pass Trail, Girdwood, has eight cabins along the way.

(8) Crow Pass Trail, Girdwood, leads through a “winter wonderland” of ice glaciers, wildflowers, and mining remains.

(9) Kesugi Ridge Trail, Talkeetna

(10) Byers Lake Trail, Talkeetna

As the saying goes, “If you stay in Alaska for more than a year, your feet will be frozen in it.”
